THE WiNS PROJECT, INC.
Meadville, Pennsylvania has a poverty level of about 25%, which is over twice the national average. The WiNS Project, Inc. works to provide weekend nutrition for students in each of the Crawford Central elementary schools. We regularly serve over 500 students each week!
The WiNS Project, Inc. began in November 2013 as students in Second District were reporting that the thing they were most thankful for was food. This spawned nurse Sue Mulvey and teacher Leslie Jensen to wonder why students were responding this way and the answer was simple, they were hungry. Hungry bellies make it hard to concentrate, be productive in the classroom as well as outside of it, and most importantly grow. This understanding is the call to action, thus The WiNS Project, Inc. was born! With the first donation in March of 2014, WiNS was able to begin its distribution of nutrition that following October.
JOINING FORCES
Thanks to our generous donors and volunteers, WiNS has been able to feed Crawford Central School District's elementary students for the past ten years. Groceries were purchased using monetary donations. Weekend food bags were packed by volunteers, and were then distributed to the five CCSD elementary schools on Fridays during the school year.

In spring 2024, discussions began regarding how to best continue this program going forward. Securing the groceries each week was becoming difficult for our volunteer group - as well as time consuming and expensive. Enter Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest PA!!
Second Harvest Food Bank has agreed to take over our Backpack program going forward. With their access to reliable food sources, they will provide the food to be distributed to the children in all five Crawford Central School District elementary schools. WiNS volunteers will continue to pack and distribute the bags to the schools.
